If you’re like me, you want to make sure you and your kids have a healthy and non-toxic environment to sleep in. But you may not know where to start when it comes to finding affordable organic kids mattresses. That’s why I love the Eco Organic, which is often thought of as the Avocado kid’s mattress.

Because let’s be honest, organic mattresses tend to be expensive (and rightfully so). The materials, testing, and certifications for organic mattresses all cost more than traditional polyurethane foam, so it’s hard to keep costs down.

But at the same time, mattresses are one of the biggest sources of toxicants in our home. Flame retardants, volatile organic chemicals, formaldehyde… all these chemicals are commonly found in traditional mattresses. And they can cause life-long health effects (especially for kids).

That’s why I was so excited when I heard about the new Avocado Eco mattress. It’s considered the most affordable organic mattress made here in the United States, so if you’re looking for a mattress for your kids, it’s a great place to start.

I’m grateful to have partnered with Avocado, who sent me an Eco Organic mattress to try out for my own kids. Here’s my Avocado Eco Organic Kid’s Mattress review, which I love for my little boy (and it’s pretty comfortable for me too!).

Non-toxic features of Avocado Eco mattress

Mattresses are one of the most dangerous sources of hazardous chemicals in a home. Because the levels of these pollutants are highest near the surface of the bed (where your kid’s head is resting and breathing room is), it’s critical to choose a non-toxic mattress.

The great thing about the Avocado Eco Organic mattress is that it’s made with natural materials like organic wool and latex, and is free of harmful chemicals. It is truly a healthy mattress for kids.

The Eco Organic mattress is made with no polyurethane foam or memory foam (which often offgas toxic volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). In addition, there are no adhesives, making this mattress formaldehyde free.

Because wool is naturally flame resistant, there are no chemical flame retardants added to the Eco Organic. This further reduces toxicants that you or your child may be exposed to.

The wool, cotton, and latex are all certified organic (by GOTS and GOLS), meaning there’s undetectable levels of lead or other heavy metals and that these materials are produced in a sustainable, socially responsible manner. It is also Greenguard Gold certified, meaning that VOC levels are extremely low.

Finally, these materials are also certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, meaning they are safe from toxic dyes, pesticides, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and many other toxic compounds.

Is the Avocado Eco organic mattress comfortable?

We got a twin Eco mattress for our 5 year old son, and honestly, I’m a little jealous of it! It’s super comfortable.

This mattress is medium firm, and my son sleeps like a rock on it. I’ve laid on it myself and found it to be comfortable and supportive. However, you don’t sink deep into it (which is best if you fall asleep in bed with your little one).

The Eco also has great edge support, meaning it doesn’t fold under your weight. If you’re looking at the Eco for cosleeping, this is a fantastic feature (because babies and toddler have this magical ability to shove you all the way to the edge of your mattress).

Because of its firmness level, the Eco is great for toddlers and children. It’s also perfect for adult back and stomach sleepers between 130-230 lbs (59-105 kg), or side sleepers over 230 lbs (105 kg).

One thing to keep in mind: Because this mattress is 10 inches tall (with a cotton cover, 2 inch organic latex layer, and 8 inch recycled steel coil layer), it’s probably not best for bunk beds. For that, you’d want the Eco Organic Kid’s Mattress, which has a lower profile of only 6 inches.

Even though we have a twin mattress from Avocado, it’s a little heavy. One perk I noticed when moving this mattress to our son’s room was the fabric handles on the side. They made moving the mattress much easier.

How is the the Avocado Eco Organic mattress shipped?

It’s surprising how small the box is that your organic kid’s mattress will come in!

The Eco Organic kid’s mattress is tightly rolled in a plastic vacuumed package, boxed, and shipped to your house. Once you remove it and unroll it from the packaging, it quickly “inflates” and is ready to go.

How does the Avocado Eco organic mattress price compare to other organic mattresses?

The Avocado Eco organic mattress is a great choice for parents looking for an eco-friendly and non-toxic option for their kids. Made with certified organic latex, wool and cotton, the Avocado Eco mattress is free of harmful chemicals and flame retardants.

I’m really impressed that the Eco has so many great certifications, especially at its price point. At the time of this writing, a twin is only $699, and you can get a queen for less than $1000.

If you’re like me, you may wonder how Avocado can put out such a great mattress at such a low price point. Basically, they own all parts of their supply chain (including the sheep herds where they get their wool and the rubber tree farms where they get their latex). This not only ensures a lower price, but it also means they can make sure everyone in their supply chain gets a fair wage.

That means they can cut costs from moving through middle-men (btw, Avocado is the only American mattress company that owns all parts of their supply chain and manufacturing like this).

The only other organic mattress at a price point this low is the Kiwi from My Green Mattress. If you want to learn more about it, I’ve reviewed it too.

What’s the difference between the Avocado Eco Organic and the Avocado Green Mattress?

Avocado has three tiers of mattresses: the Eco Organic, the Green Mattress, and the Organic Luxury Mattress, (They also have the Vegan hybrid if you want to avoid wool in your mattress). They each have their own features, so you can pick the one that is best for you.

Eco Organic Mattress

The Eco Organic is the most economical of the four Avocado mattresses. Because of that, it’s often considered Avocado’s “kid mattress.”

It has three layers – a cotton cover, a latex comfort layer, and a steel coil support – and is 10 inches tall. It is a medium-firm mattress, and you can get a matching Organic mattress topper made of 2 inches of GOLS certified organic latex and a GOTS certified organic cotton cover if you want a softer feel.

The Eco Organic is a fantastic, well made non-toxic mattress at a great price. It is made of the same high quality, organic and certified materials as all of Avocado’s products, and is definitely a healthy mattress for kids. With that said, the Eco Organic is missing a few of the special touches the higher end mattresses have.

Green Mattress

The Green Mattress is Avocado’s next step up. It has more support coils, which are arranged in 5 ergonomic zones to keep your back aligned and relieve pressure points. It is also needle-tufted by hand to avoid toxic adhesives while increasing the life of your mattress.

The Green Mattress is a bit firmer than the Eco Organic, but you can add an attached pillow-top if you want a bit more pressure relief.

Organic Luxury Mattress

If you want a premium non-toxic mattress, the Organic Luxury Mattress is the way to go. All of Avocado’s Luxury Mattresses come with an attached pillow-top (and need deep pocket sheets). It has 17 layers made from latex, wool, mohair, silk, hemp, and cotton.

The Luxury Mattress can have more than double the number of support coils as the Green mattress, and they are also arranged in 5 ergonomic zones for spine alignment and pressure relief. This mattress also has the best motion isolation of all the Avocado mattresses (so you don’t feel your partner moving beside you in bed).

The “standard” version of the Luxury Mattress is medium firm, but you can also get a “plush” version that is a bit softer if you prefer.

Where can you buy an Avocado Eco Organic mattress

Avocado stores are currently concentrated on the coasts, with several in California (they’re made in Los Angeles), and a few sprinkled in NYC, DC, and New Jersey.

Fortunately, Avocado allows you to purchase online, and they have a generous trial and return policy. You have one year to test your mattress and make sure you love it.
