As I’ve said in my other Avocado mattress reviews, a healthy and non-toxic sleep environment is incredibly important. But you also need to know if a mattress is comfortable! That’s why I want to tell you all about my experience with the Avocado Green mattress.
Let’s be honest, organic mattresses can be pricey (and rightfully so). The materials, testing, and certifications for organic mattresses all cost more than traditional polyurethane foam, so it’s hard to keep costs down.
But at the same time, mattresses are one of the biggest sources of toxicants in our home. Flame retardants, volatile organic chemicals, formaldehyde… all these chemicals are commonly found in traditional mattresses. And they can cause life-long health effects (especially for kids).

I’m grateful to have partnered with Avocado, who sent me one of their Green mattresses to try out for my daughter. Here’s my Avocado Green Mattress review, which she loves (and I’m pretty jealous of!).

Is the Avocado Green mattress non toxic?
Mattresses are one of the most dangerous sources of hazardous chemicals in a home. Because the levels of these pollutants are highest near the surface of the bed (where your head is resting and breathing room is), it’s critical to choose a non-toxic mattress.
The great thing about the Avocado Green mattress is that it’s made with natural materials like organic wool and latex, and is free of harmful chemicals. It is truly a healthy mattress for kids and adults alike.
The Green mattress is made with no polyurethane foam or memory foam (which often offgas toxic volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). In addition, there are no adhesives, making this mattress formaldehyde free.
Because wool is naturally flame resistant, there are no chemical flame retardants added to the Avocado Green. This further reduces toxicants that you or your child may be exposed to.
The wool, cotton, and latex are all certified organic (by GOTS and GOLS), meaning there’s undetectable levels of lead or other heavy metals and that these materials are produced in a sustainable, socially responsible manner. It is also Greenguard Gold certified, meaning that VOC levels are extremely low.
Finally, these materials are also certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, meaning they are safe from toxic dyes, pesticides, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and many other toxic compounds.
Is the Avocado Green mattress comfortable?
My daughter was the one who snagged this mattress, and I’ll be honest, I’m super jealous. It’s so comfortable.
The Avocado Green is medium firm (or a little softer if you spring for the pillow top). It’s supportive and cozy. I don’t find myself sinking deep into it (although I haven’t personally tested it with the pillow top).
This mattress also has excellent edge support, meaning the edges don’t collapse and let you go tumbling out of bed in the middle of the night. If you have a toddler who sleeps with you (because children somehow always shove you to the very edge of the bed), this support is a must-have.
There’s great support throughout the body of the mattress too. There are up to 1438 tempered steel coils (in the king, fewer in smaller sizes of course) arranged in 5 distinct ergonomic zones so you get more support where you need it. The coils float individually so that the person sleeping beside you doesn’t disturb you with tossing and turning.
Because of its firmness level, the Avocado Green is great for toddlers and children (if you want to spring for it). But if you want it for yourself, it’s also amazing for adults. The original is recommended for combination sleepers over 130 lbs, while the pillow top is better for those under 130 lbs or back sleepers under 230 lbs.
The latex core plus the coil-based support layer make this mattress comfortable for hot sleepers (hello, postpartum and/or perimenopause!) With that said, adding the pillow top will make this mattress a bit warmer.
The Avocado Green mattress has two handles on each side in case you ever need to move it. The handles are helpful, because this mattress is heavy. Even the twin is over 75 lbs, and the king is 134 lbs. With that said, this mattress never needs flipping, so once you get it in place you should be good to go.
What’s the difference between the Avocado Eco Organic and the Avocado Green Mattress?
Avocado has three tiers of mattresses: the Eco Organic, the Green Mattress, and the Organic Luxury Mattress, (They also have the Vegan hybrid if you want to avoid wool in your mattress). They each have their own features, so you can pick the one that is best for you.
Eco Organic Mattress
The Eco Organic is the most economical of the four Avocado mattresses. Because of that, it’s often considered Avocado’s “kid mattress.”
It has three layers – a cotton cover, a latex comfort layer, and a steel coil support – and is 10 inches tall. It is a medium-firm mattress, and you can get a matching Organic mattress topper made of 2 inches of GOLS certified organic latex and a GOTS certified organic cotton cover if you want a softer feel.
The Eco Organic is a fantastic, well made non-toxic mattress at a great price. It is made of the same high quality, organic and certified materials as all of Avocado’s products, and is definitely a healthy mattress for kids. With that said, the Eco Organic is missing a few of the special touches the higher end mattresses have.
Green Mattress
The Green Mattress is Avocado’s next step up. It has more support coils, which are arranged in 5 ergonomic zones to keep your back aligned and relieve pressure points. It is also needle-tufted by hand to avoid toxic adhesives while increasing the life of your mattress.
The Green Mattress is a bit firmer than the Eco Organic, but you can add an attached pillow-top if you want a bit more pressure relief.
Organic Luxury Mattress
If you want a premium non-toxic mattress, the Organic Luxury Mattress is the way to go. All of Avocado’s Luxury Mattresses come with an attached pillow-top (and need deep pocket sheets). It has 17 layers made from latex, wool, mohair, silk, hemp, and cotton.
The Luxury Mattress can have more than double the number of support coils as the Green mattress, and they are also arranged in 5 ergonomic zones for spine alignment and pressure relief. This mattress also has the best motion isolation of all the Avocado mattresses (so you don’t feel your partner moving beside you in bed).
The “standard” version of the Luxury Mattress is medium firm, but you can also get a “plush” version that is a bit softer if you prefer.
Where can you buy an Avocado mattress
Avocado stores are currently concentrated on the coasts, with several in California (they’re made in Los Angeles), and a few sprinkled in NYC, DC, and New Jersey.
Fortunately, Avocado allows you to purchase online, and they have a generous trial and return policy. You have one year to test your mattress and make sure you love it.
