What is a pikler triangle?

A pikler triangle is simple but super engaging Montessori-style climbing triangle for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. This toy was created by Dr. Emmi Pikler, a pediatrician who believed in fostering children’s independent activity and exploration.

Like so many things developed by Dr. Pikler, the climbing triangle (or pikler triangle) is an open-ended toy, allowing for more imaginative play as baby gets older.

In addition, the Learn ‘N Climb from Little Partners follows Dr. Pikler’s vision by being a wooden (not plastic) toy. It’s Greenguard Gold certified, meaning you can be confident that your child won’t be exposed to lead, phthalates, formaldehyde, or other dangerous chemicals while playing on this structure.

Best age for the pikler triangle

A pikler triangle can be introduced as early as 6 months. As babies look up at, crawl under, and pull up on this structure, their vision and gross motor skills develop.

As babies grow, they start testing their limits. That’s when the climbing triangle becomes really fun. At this age, your baby can start climbing up and over their toy.

As your child enters new stages of development, they’ll start playing new games with their pikler triangle. My boys loved incorporating theirs into The Floor is Lava. They climbed over the triangle to get from one color stepping stone to the next.

My 6 year old also enjoys making a house or stuffed animal hotel by covering the Learn N’ Climb with blankets. Sometimes the boys will even put blankets on the floor underneath and cuddle up there to rest. Super cute.

Even my 8 and 10 year olds like to play on the Learn ‘N Climb triangle. And with it being sturdy enough to withstand up to 200 lbs (90 kg), they’re definitely still safe to do so.

The best pikler triangle: Little Partners Learn ‘N Climb

There’s so much to love about the Learn ‘N Climb triangle. One of its best features over its competitors is Little Partners’ commitment to creating a non-toxic environment for kids.

The Learn ‘N Climb is GREENGUARD GOLD CERTIFIED, meaning it has undergone rigorous scientific testing for over 10,000 chemical emissions and VOCs. In addition, it is constructed from the highest-quality layered birch and poplar that is EPA TSCA Title VI and FSC (Forest Stewardship Counsel) compliant. Finally, the Learn ‘N Climb is finished in child-safe, non-toxic paints (either white or natural).

I also appreciate that you can use two screws to easily adjust the height and pitch of the Learn ‘N Climb (no tools needed). For younger children, the lowest setting is best. If your kids want more of a challenge, the steeper angle may be more fun for them.

The adjustable design of the Learn ‘N Climb also allows you to fold this triangle for storage (giving it a much smaller footprint when put away).

NOTE: If you have extra-curious little ones, it is possible that they could figure out how to take out the screws that hold the adjustable height in place. With that said, none of my four kids have tried to reverse engineer our triangle, even though the boys helped me do the initial assembly.

If your kids want a more dynamic climbing frame, you. can get the 2-in-1 Climbing Ramp/Slide, which is specifically designed to connect to the Learn ‘N Climb. You can hook the other end of the ramp to the Little Partners learning tower for even more fun.
