Benefits of Toddler Breastfeeding

Although people often refer to toddler breastfeeding as extended breastfeeding or extended nursing, I don’t typically use that term. Instead, I prefer full term breastfeeding, because it is normal for toddlers to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding your toddler has many positive effects for both mom and baby! We’ll talk about just a few here.

01.

Breastfeeding past a year reduces baby's lifelong risk of heart disease, several cancers, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases.

Extended breastfeeding can help you avoid braces for your child in the future. Nursing helps broaden your child's pallete, meaning they can fit all their adult teeth later.

02.

03.

Moms who breastfeed past at least 33 months (this can be spread over multiple kids) have decreased risk of osteoporosis when they're older.

04.

If your toddler isn't showing much interest in solid food, no problem! Breastmilk fills in any nutritional gaps.

05.

Extended breastfeeding decreases mom's chances of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
