IS ZOLOFT SAFE FOR BREASTFEEDING?

Have you been prescribed Zoloft while you’re breastfeeding, but you’re afraid of side effects for your baby?

While antidepressants are often prescribed for people with depression and/or anxiety, you may be worried about trying a medication when you’re breastfeeding. Read on to learn more about the safety of taking Zoloft for your baby.

STARTING ANTIDEPRESSANTS AS A BREASTFEEDING MOM

After my third child was born, there were some really intense life events that cropped up. I needed to go to the next level of help and I knew it. So I considered taking an antidepressant.

Because of my background in chemistry and Public Health, I knew that whatever I’m exposed to would end up, to some degree, in my breastmilk. I decided some research was in order.

ZOLOFT SIDE EFFECTS ON BREASTFEEDING BABIES

There are very few, if any reports. There are very few reports of babies being agitated or having sleep issues are out there. In addition, there’s no evidence that Zoloft affects breast milk supply.

ZOLOFT AND BREASTFEEDING LONG-TERM EFFECTS

There’s no indication of long term effects on children caused by the combination of Zoloft and breastfeeding.

What I learned is that analysts can’t even detect the drug in the blood most infants who are exposed to Zoloft through breastmilk.

However, there are studies showing that a mother's anxiety may have long-term impact on her child, even into adulthood.
